Mozilla Releases SeaMonkey 2.0

Posted by madhavkobal on 28/10/2009

The Mozilla developers have announced the availability of version 2.0 of their SeaMonkey “all-in-one Internet application suite”. The “completely refurbished next generation” successor to the old Netscape Communicator and Mozilla Application suites includes a web browser with advanced email and newsgroup support, an IRC chat client and HTML editing support.

SeaMonkey 2.0 on Mac OS X. Vergrößern SeaMonkey 2.0 is based on the same internal platform as Firefox 3.5.4, which is expected to be released later today. SeaMonkey 2.0 includes several new features, such as support for HTML 5 tags, improved JavaScript performance and off line data storage for applications. The addition of a new Add-on Manager lets users install, update, disable and remove extensions. Like Firefox, themes and plug-ins can be installed and closed windows can now easily be re-opened. The Password Manager, Cookie Manager and Form Managers have all been updated, or replaced with a newer version. Other notable improvements include a new download manager that supports cross-session resumable downloads. There is Thunderbird based RSS and Atom feed support in the MailNews component and support for mail archiving.

More details about the release, including a list of all of the new features, can be found in the SeaMonkey 2.0 release notes and the changelog. SeaMonkey 2.0 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. As SeaMonkey 2.0 is based on the 3.5.x branch of Firefox, the developers note that it no longer supports Windows 95, 98, ME, NT or Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther).

SeaMonkey binaries are released under the Mozilla SeaMonkey End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
