White House Goes Open Source!

Posted by madhavkobal on 28/10/2009

The official website for the White House is now powered by the free and open source Drupal content management system.

WhiteHouse.gov, the official website for the White House and President Barack Obama, now runs on open source. The White House has launched a new version of its website, powered by the open source Drupal content management system and Apache Solr search server.

“We wanted to improve the tools used by thousands of people who come to whitehouse.gov to engage with White House officials, and each other, in meaningful ways,” White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said in an e-mail to InformationWeek. “We now have a technology platform to get more and more voices on the site. This is state-of-the-art technology, and the government is a participant in it.”

Whitehouse.gov going open source means the programming language will be visible to the public and will also allow them to use or insert their own improvements.

The Associated Press quoted Terri Molini, Open Source for America, as saying, “Security is fundamentally built into the development process because the community is made up of people from all across the world, and they look at the source code from the very start of the process until it’s deployed and after.”

Now, this is a testing time for Drupal in terms of security as the White House website has always been a target for cybercriminals. Drupal is a free content management system written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License.
